The Math and Mission is a wonderful synthesis of meditation, worship, study and work. Simple study of the scriptures ends in something dry and insipid, if it does not express its conclusions in terms of the activities of life. Similarly, mere work uninspired by religion and unaccompanied by meditation and discrimination, degenerates into a kind of pure social activity. Love, catholicity, purity and selflessness are the cornerstones of the Ramakrishna Order. The Neo-monasticism of the Ramakrishna Organization is not an institution based on the total negation of the world and worldly life, is not given to the narrow ideal of individual salvation, but it offers one a new field of Sadhana (Spiritual Practice) for one’s own uplift in which the Supreme is realized through service to others. The Ramakrishna Movement, in the language of Christopher Isherwood, “has always preserved its dual character – contemplative Math and socially active Mission.”Ramakrishna Order is a force to be reckoned with all over the world today-a force to direct the energies of men and women for their own spiritual uplift and for bending their energies for the amelioration of the material condition of the less privileged. Swami Vivekananda, who gave formal shape to this Order, placed these twin ideals before it – Atmano Mokshartham jagaddhitaya cha. The Order has kept this ideal undimmed before it during the last one century and more, and acquired the recognition it has today by the dedicated monastic members in diverse fields of activity – social, intellectual, moral and spiritual. In this Order, there are ideological solution of some global problems of man, which have baffled thinkers and revolutionaries down the ages. Its stand is clear, simple, and bold. The central theme of existence is the proven fact of God. Existence being one and homogeneous, individual soul and the supreme spirit are identical. Problems of existence being one and homogeneous, individual soul and the supreme spirit are identical.

Problems of existence arise and multiply when this plenary identity is forgotten or ignored. All problems in the world can be solved only by working out the implication of the supreme identity in all human contexts, physical, mental and spiritual. We may start anywhere, tarry as long as we may like on the way. However, the destination of the pilgrimage being God, we must remember to move onward and forward, inward and God-ward. But He is not far away for there is no where He is not going about. Therefore, this Order gives a most daring answer in the form of a challenging question: if God can be worshipped through an image, why not through man? It brings home the most refreshing message of classical Vedanta in terms understandable and agreeable to everybody: Learn to make the whole world your own. No one is a stranger, my child; the whole world is your own. This “own-making” has to be attempted in the authentic manner of self-giving by the Supreme Spirit symbolized in the Purusha Sukta of the Rig Veda.

All interaction, therefore, has to follow the law: “Help and not fight” “Assimilation and not Destruction” “Harmony and Peace and not Dissension”. It is by sowing the seeds of the highest truths on the farmland of life we can raise an ample golden harvest with which to feed all mankind for everyone’s physical, mental and spiritual development. No one need go hungry in this world. We can wipe off all tears. The most needed thing is love to make the noblest universal ideals workable. No doubt, we need bread. But never will everyone get enough bread even in an abundant world unless our “own-making” of the world becomes a reality. No political ideology can generate love in human heart. But practiced essential religion can.

The Ramakrishna Order is dedicated to making these ideals workable in the brass tacks of life so that the twin ideals of “Highest freedom of the self and good of the world” may become the reality of experience. Ramakrishna Movement being a developing movement, the dynamics of which covers global dimensions on physical, mental and spiritual levels, we can only be like a window through which to look at the cultivated fields in the vicinity and the blue horizons that glisten at a receding distance of space and time. This Movement exhorts all mankind to hasten to do everything possible and impossible to offer to the last and least person in the world the best and the most, and together with this smoothen the path of all to acquire and obtain Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha – Righteousness, wealth, Pleasure and Spiritual Illumination; in one word, self-fulfillment. The world is looking forward to the coming of this New Man-who is aware of his own identity and is always anxious to discover and worship the same divinity in all others-in ever increasing number. Whoever will open his eyes and see, whoever is not deaf but would listen, has reason to be gladdened in heart that the world has an ongoing Ramakrishna Movement.
